How important are our feet? Do we give them the workout they need to stay strong and supple to support what they carry? They need to take the whole weight of our body so why do we spend so much time developing in the rest of us and totally neglecting the feet. We walk on them, we run on them and jump on them so they should get all the exercise they need but do they? Sport shoes are big business and designers have told us how all of the support and cussing will protect them.

The shoes we wear are totally design based on FASHION not with the best interest of our feet in mind.

I strongly believe barefoot training is essential. We were not born with shoes on?

Our feet is composed of 26 bones that’s 25% of all the bones in your body, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. All of these components work in harmony to support your body as your run, jumps and walk. When the feet are not strong they will often cause problems in other parts of the body.

A group of doctors in 1905 carry out studied on the feet of native people in the Philippines and Central Africa. The study were published in the American Journal of Orthopedic Surgery, and compared the feet of these natural barefoot populations with the feet of 1905 “modern” shoe wearers.

Doctors observed that on the naturally barefoot person’s foot that a line could be drawn to pass through the big toe to the ball of the foot, and heel. Further their toes naturally spread out which would allow for a wider base for stranding, walking, running and jumping.

Doctors observed that the foot formed the shape of the shoe that was worn. The toes did not fan out like those of the barefoot populations and you could not draw a line directly from the big toe to heel. The foot was much more thinner and look weak which when compared to the barefoot people offered a less stable support base.

Continuing research exposed the necessitate for investigating whether shoes with a lot of support are starting to have a reverse effect and actually interfering with our natural way of walking and performance of our feet. Studies of equipment that impersonate the motion of the barefoot in an effort to improve speed, lateral movement and coordination are being done in research centers throughout the world.

The hypothesis is that we are losing our natural ability to perform basic function using the human foot. The foot is a multifaceted network of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. In an attempt to control and cushion our feet to prevent injury, we have fashioned footwear that has actually masked the natural performance of our feet.

Researchers are now working meticulously to discover why there are now have so many skeletal injuries than ever before. In an attempt to blend fashion with performance, more sales it now shows that we could have gone too far.

Now the mission is to correct this and design footwear that works naturally with the feet and allows the best movement. Arch supports, lateral stability and cushioning has been in most of our workout footwear and sold to us for years. We are not all shaped the same, however and some of us absolutely require correction and support, but the fact is the majority of us do not. The prescription of orthotics and arch supports is becoming the norm as a quick fix for pronation, supination and many joint and back issues. In short, a treatment of the symptom rather than the cause. Can the use of such support actually inhibit the performance and create more problems than they cure? Present researchers are confirming that what we really require is a training tool that will actually condition our feet and start forcing our feet do the work they are intended to do. The receptors in the feet let the joints know how to perform optimally. If those receptors are masked, what will be the end result? Only time and research will tell.

An article in the Canadian Chiropractor Magazine – December 2005, entitled “Getting Grounded by Going Barefoot” discusses the newest research in the significance of training tools for strengthening the performance of the feet. This excerpt is only one of many such articles.

“Podiatrists would validate that, in some cases, foot structure has been deformed by the long-term effects of wearing fashionable shoes. This would also create a lot of other joint problems due to incorrect walking methods, which is forced up on you by the design of the shoes.

It’s all about how you look and not if something works, time for some rethinking. Furthermore, we appear to be losing the ability to perform basic functions such as standing and balancing without the aid of a shoe.

University coaches and trainers have been incorporating barefoot running as a cross-training technique, in order to strengthen the intrinsic muscles of the feet, resulting in fewer injuries.

Claims have been made that when training barefoot, athletes have run faster, like the legendary Kenyan runners. Not all of us have the luxury of perfect surfaces to train barefoot on.

Innovative footwear that allows barefoot movement is being produced by companies such as Nike (the Free 5.0 Trainer), Masai Barefoot Technology Shoes, and Kangoo Jumps low impact boots which has been a head of them all for over 15 years.”

The continuing research is confirming that barefoot training is in fact producing more speed and less injury in warm-ups and in short distances. The question remains that even with all this research, how could we continue to run distance without the obvious stresses to the human anatomy. The ground forces alone, generates a lot of stresses on our joints like knees, lower back, spine, shin splints giving a lot of joint pain, etc. There are still a lot of questions that remain unanswered and are yet to be reveled through continuing research in barefoot training.
